Spotlight on Dr. Mary Wells
“I am embedded with a group of talented and committed people from our clinicians to our doctors to our receptionists at the front desk who warmly greet visitors. This is a consistently positive place to work and help those in the community,” says Dr. Mary Wells, who has served as the Director of Psychology since 2009.
Dr. Wells comes from a multigenerational legacy of givers: doctors, ministers, and teachers. She says, “I always knew I would end up in a helping profession. I like people and they talk to me which is how it all began.” She came to Sheltering Arms in July 2000 as a staff psychologist and has helped countless patients rebuild their lives. The mission of Sheltering Arms, she explains, fits with her values.
Her wise counsel provides those patients suffering from chronic pain or anxiety a beacon of hope to reclaim meaning in their lives. “When I conceptualize a treatment plan, I look through a multi-layered lens for each individual that incorporates physical, mental, emotional and spiritual elements.” For example, Dr. Wells worked with Marilyn* for more than ten years. She suffered from major chronic pain issues which negatively affected her relationships as a result. With Dr. Wells’ guidance, Marilyn discovered a path that brought new meaning to her life. She started taking art classes and ultimately developed a passion for painting. This creative outlet gave Marilyn new purpose to her life and she ultimately worked her way out of therapy.
Dr. Wells remains true to her values of helping others. With strength and competence, she has spent the last 25 years giving her patients the tools they need to heal and transform their own lives. After countless success stories, we are grateful for her strong leadership and the life changing work she performs daily.
