Sheltering Arms Names New Chief Executive Officer

December 7, 2016 – Sheltering Arms announced today that Mary A. Zweifel will assume the role of president and chief executive officer, effective January 1, 2017. Ms. Zweifel, who joined the organization as chief operating officer in September 2012, has served as interim president and CEO since her predecessor’s retirement in December 2015.
“Mary has an extensive and successful history of executive-level healthcare leadership,” says J. Waverly Pulley III, Sheltering Arms board chair. “She has steered Sheltering Arms through several important initiatives over the past year including, as previously-announced, the formation of a joint venture with VCU Health System, which is currently seeking regulatory approval for the construction of a new 114-bed rehabilitation hospital at The Notch in West Creek Medical Park. Her impressive capabilities are matched by her enthusiasm and passion for Sheltering Arms and the patients we serve.”
Immediately prior to joining Sheltering Arms, Ms. Zweifel was CEO of Penn State Hershey Rehabilitation Hospital in Pennsylvania. She has held both clinical and leadership positions at other well-known rehabilitation organizations throughout her career and has served as a surveyor for the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities for nearly two decades. Ms. Zweifel earned her bachelor of science in occupational therapy as well as her master of science degree from University of Kansas.
In her new position, Ms. Zweifel will oversee all operations throughout the Sheltering Arms continuum of care, including two hospitals totaling 68 beds, 11 outpatient centers and a variety of related health and wellness services. She also currently serves as chair of the board of managers of the joint venture with VCU Health System and is expected to continue in that role. Her primary office is in the Sheltering Arms administrative office building on Eastshore Drive in Glen Allen.
