Move more and stay safe
May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Awareness Month. As the weather warms and Memorial Day approaches, it’s hard not to want to get outside and move more without risk of injury.
Regular physical activity is good for everyone’s health. People of all ages and body types can be physically active. Physical activity can improve muscular fitness, bone health, and heart health in children and adolescents. Adults can lower the risk of heart disease, type2 diabetes, and some types of cancer if they exercise. For older adults, physical activity can lower the risk of falls and improve cognitive functioning (like learning and judgment skills). Exercise is for everyone. No matter what shape you are in, you can find activities that work for you.
One of the easiest and least expensive ways to exercise is running. There are numerous couch-to-5K apps that will help you move from a power walker to jogger. To learn more about how runners protect themselves, click here.
