Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physicians (physiatrists) specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions that may produce temporary or permanent physical limitations. They are trained to fully understand how each of the body's major systems impacts function, and are dedicated to assessing and treating the whole person, not just a specific symptom. This approach provides tailored treatment plans and goals to meet the individual needs of each person's overall function and lifestyle.
Along with treating patients directly, our physiatrists are also the team leaders, coordinating care with other members of the patient's health care team, including therapists, nurses, medical psychologists and other physicians. Upon admission to a Sheltering Arms hospital, patients are paired with an attending physician who has the primary responsibility of overseeing the care provided by the treatment team. This allows patients to feel comfortable and gain full confidence in the treatment they receive.
